'Detroit Unleaded' a romantic dramedy

Rola Nashef was born in Lebanon and grew up in Lansing. She is shown on the roof of her apartment building in Detroit.

Described by first-time feature director Rola Nashef as a slice-of-life romantic dramedy, "Detroit Unleaded" tells the story of Sami, a young Lebanese-American man from Dearborn who runs a gas station in Detroit with his fast-talking cousin Mike. "We've never really seen Arab Americans portrayed in this way before, this sort of everyday life, and also being portrayed as young and sexy and hip and cool and funny," says the Detroit-based Nashef, 39, who's also the film's producer and writer.

The movie also touches on the relationship between the Arab-American and African-American communities in Detroit and how it plays out through the bulletproof glass of a local business -- a setting that also serves as a metaphor.
