'Beautiful Creatures' trailer released

image?.Caption

We are so ready to get lost in the big screen adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's bestseller "Beautiful Creatures," we almost can't stand it. Luckily for us, our anticipation was tempered a bit today via the release of the film's first teaser trailer.

The nearly two-minute preview opens with exterior shots of reclusive Macon Ravenwood's manor, followed by an ominous introduction of his niece Lena Duchannes (played by Alice Englert) by Mrs. Lincoln (Emma Thompson) cataloguing all the creepy and mysterious things that have happened in and around Duchannes' presence, intercut with clips of the mysterious girl shifting and gripping her seat in school.

"You know, not everything's life and death . . . sometimes it's just fun."

And there's plenty of romantic fun to be had - not only in "Angels Fall," the TV movie based on the novel by Nora Roberts, but in all of her books.

Grace Kelly's film legacy lives on

FILE - In this 1954 file photo, James Stewart and Grace Kelly are shown in Alfred Hitchcock's film,
It has been 30 years since Grace Kelly, a princess of Monaco died in a car crash but, writes Alison Kerr, her legacy in film and fashion lives on.

Grace Kelly. The name is synonymous with Hollywood’s glamorous heyday, timeless style, cool elegance and storybook romance. It may be 30 years since her untimely, shocking death – on 14 September, 1982 – but the fascination for the movie star who married a prince is still strong, and her influence is still keenly felt in the world of fashion and beyond.

During her 52 years – half of them as Grace Kelly, half as Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco – the bewitching blonde from Philadelphia established herself as a movie goddess, a style icon and a fairytale princess. In other words, a total one-off.

Throughout her pre-princess career, however, all Grace Kelly wanted was to be an actress – and a serious, respected one at that. And although she only made 11 films (squeezed into three and a half years), they include four classics and one Oscar-winning performance.

'A Foriegn Affair' - Review

Next month TCM and Universal are releasing the DVD of A Foreign Affair for the first time on DVD.

Legendary director Billy Wilder made a number of great films, including Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment. He won a truckload of Academy Awards for both his writing and direction. In 1945, Wilder hit the jackpot with his classic The Lost Weekend, the first serious study of alcoholism in American films. This film won Best Picture, Director and Best Actor for Ray Milland. In 1950, Wilder's Sunset Boulevard was also a sensation, only slightly upstaged by All About Eve, which won most of the Oscars that year.

Susan Sarandon says all her films are love stories

Susan Sarandon sees her new movie, "Arbitrage," as a love story but that's no surprise: She sees every movie she has made as a love story.

"Whatever it is, for me, it's a love story -- even 'Dead Man Walking' was a love story about redemption," says Sarandon, right after promising that she's "not brain-dead yet" because, instead of a morning full of interviews, she stepped away to attend the memorial service for the late writer Gore Vidal.

<p>Logan Lerman and Emma Watson in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower"</p>

Youth commands that all must endure a Smiths phase. If it was not you yourself who, at one point, attended the church of Morrissey, then at least a family member or someone close to you did. Stephen Chbosky, author of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” recognizes this post-1982 rite and fully integrated in to his own screen adaptation, with the story’s principals fledgling through high school and exchanging mixtapes in the meanwhile.

Blossoming: Emma is a real beauty

Elegant Emma Watson gazes earnestly with her bewitching eyes and confides that she’s learnt a lot about herself recently.

She captured millions of adolescent hearts while starring in the Harry Potter films but the downside of her fame meant she missed out on most of the normal teenage stuff.
But Emma, 22, has gone through a crash course in growing up while filming her new movie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

She admits the coming-of-age romance gave her a taste of teenage rebellion and helped her understand what love is really about.

Top 10 TV Kisses that were worth the wait

10 tv kisses that were worth the wait

Will they or won’t they relationships are a television staple. For many fans, waiting for their favorite couple to get to the “will” stage is the highlight of the show. Usually it takes multiple seasons worth of long looks, miscommunication and crazy obstacles before the duo will make their feelings known, but when they finally do, viewers are rewarded for their patience with a long-awaited kiss. There is a lot of pressure put on that lip-lock to be a success. If it’s subpar it can sink a ship faster than an iceberg, but if it’s actually worth the wait it can be among the most memorable moments in a show’s run. Of course, not all long-awaited kisses are between couples suffering from UST (unresolved sexual tension). Sometimes our favorite shows find ways for established couples to have epic kisses as well.

In that spirit, I’ve come up with a list of 10 TV kisses that were well worth wait.

TV Couples that should have lasted forever

Yesterday brought us a rumor (via The New York Post) that Beverly Hills 90210's Kelly and Dylan, or Jennie Garth and Luke Perry, might actually be an item IRL. They hung out on the shoot of that Old Navy commercial you've probably seen, and, you know, sparks flew! Sparks are always flying when those two are around each other! It's a veritable firestorm of sparks. Probably, of course, they're not an item—all we have to go on is the denial of Kelly's Garth's rep, as well as a picture of the beautiful twosome together at last—but still. We can dream. While we're dreaming, we're going to dream big. Here are the other TV couples we want to see to forever and ever, onscreen or off.

The 17 best Romantic Comedies of this decade

amelie.jpg New York Times critic A.O. Scott said it best: "It might be Kate Hudson, or maybe Mandy Moore, or possibly Rachel Weisz, Lindsay Lohan or a Jennifer (Lopez? Aniston? Garner?) But if it's February, you can be pretty sure that some pretty, plucky actress will be traipsing around some glamorous and photogenic American city (or its Canadian double) in search of the dimple-chinned fellow who embodies her one true love." Here are 17 great examples from the past eight years. Romantic comedy is a sort of loose, malleable term, but the way I've defined it is this: the movie must be marginally funny and/or sweet, and there must be a romantic relationship (or relationships) at the movie's core.

'Love and Marriage: A 20th Century Romance' - BBC Documentary

Love and Marriage: A 20th Century Romance

Love and Marriage: A 20th Century Romance feels like something you might have seen on BBC4 before: it is full of jolly black-and-white footage going back a century, stuff expressly shot to extol a certain British way of life, which now looks not only quaint but a little fiendish. It's all underlined – or undermined – by testimony from people who actually lived though the period. The witnesses are, of course, the more precious resource. Fortunately the programme was no less insightful for its familiarity. It boasted a particularly strong collection of talking heads, crowned by the marvellous Diana Athill, who took us back to her parents' courtship in 1916. "Granny believed that no lady could possible let a man kiss her," she said, "unless they were going to get married."

'La Règle de jeu' - A review

Hostile: Jean Renoir (left) as Octave with Roland Toutain as André and Nora Gregor as Christine in a scene from 'La Règle du jeu'.

It begins with lines from Beaumarchais’ 18th-century comedy The Marriage of Figaro, presenting love as a winged creature which is necessarily designed to flit about. In the case of Nora Gregor’s Christine, the Austrian wife of the Marquis Robert de La Cheyniest (Marcel Dalio), happiness seems permanently elusive. She’s torn between the competing attentions of her husband, the dashing aviator André Jurieux (Roland Toutain), and even Renoir himself, in the role of a gregarious failed conductor called Octave. Robert, meanwhile, is reaching the end of a lengthy affair with Geneviève (Mila Parély), which everyone knows about except Christine.

As the season changes and thoughts turn to ghosts, goblins and witches, Actors Circle will break out its own brand of magic just ahead of Halloween.

Opening tonight for a two-weekend run at Scranton's Providence Playhouse, 1256 Providence Road, the play "Bell, Book and Candle" tells the story of a witch who casts a love spell that backfires.

The play by John Van Druten originated in New York City in the 1950s, which also serves as the story's setting. In 1958, it was adapted into a film starring James Stewart and Kim Novak.

"For those that are familiar with the film, they're going to see some things they recognize, but then there's going to be some surprises for them as well," said director David Hunisch, of Clarks Summit.

Superheros swapped for the Bard: Joss Whedon adapts 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Director Joss Whedon poses at the world premiere of the film ''Marvel's The Avengers'' in Hollywood, California April 11, 2012. REUTERS/Danny Moloshok

(Reuters) - Joss Whedon's blockbuster comic book smash "The Avengers" would seem to have little in common with William Shakespeare.

The writer and director, however, also known for creating the cult TV hit "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," calls the legendary playwright a major influence, visible in much of his work from the banter of his superheroes to the structure of his stories.

Such is his admiration, that in the wake of delivering "The Avengers" - the biggest movie hit of 2012 - Whedon has adapted "Much Ado About Nothing," a low-budget black-and-white labor of love devoted to the Bard that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"I find myself aping his rhythms and occasionally stealing his phrases, without even realizing it most of the time," Whedon told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

Shakespeare's plays have played a part in every season of the Moonlight Players for more than a decade.

Founder Jan Sheldon led the way, often setting the 400-year-old plays in recent eras to enhance the audience's understanding. When the group staged "A Midsummer Night's Dream," it was set in the Old West. "Twelfth Night" was once set in the late 1960s.

Now that the theater returns to "Twelfth Night," director David Ricklick takes over the reins and locates the romantic comedy in New Orleans in the Roaring Twenties.

The play opens at the Moonlight Players Warehouse Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

"We push the envelope here as much as we can," Ricklick said.

'Mindy Project' does not follow the romantic comedy script

Kaling flaunts her unlikable qualities.

Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) has spent a lifetime looking for the perfect man, but she can't find him. In the pilot for The Mindy Project (Tuesday, 8:30 p.m., Fox), we perceive her problem: She sees everything through the lens of romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally. It's hard for a self-described "chubby 31-year-old woman" to live up to the Meg Ryan standard — especially one as narcissistic and hardhearted as Mindy.

You may have guessed that The Mindy Project is no ordinary sitcom. Written by Kaling herself, it dares to give its heroine unlikable qualities. Yet we like her anyway, thanks to the subtle script and Kaling's equally subtle performance. She finds herself in one Katherine Heigl situation after another — for example, getting trapped in the elevator with a handsome coworker (Bill Hader) — but somehow never achieves a Heigl-worthy outcome.

As someone who considers herself stuck in the first half of a rom-com — as though my life is a DVD that refuses to skip over the damaged area so I never reach the montage where the positive changes happen that leads me to the happy ending — I am pretty much the target audience for Mindy Kaling’s new Fox comedy, The Mindy Project. Touching romantic comedy 'Hit and Run'

'Hit And Run', a touching romantic comedy!

One of the delights of life is to sometimes unexpectedly behold a little-known gem that thrills you with its ingenuity. Usually one experiences this in an old film. To find this in a film playing in the theatres now is sheer luck.

"Hit And Run" is one such film made by a passionate bunch of people, which but for a relatively lesser known cast and bad luck of not having a better studio patronising it, would have been the toast of the town.

Under witness-protection in small town America, Charlie (Dax Shepard) falls in love with Annie (Kirsten Bell). When she gets a new job in Los Angeles, Charlie decides to drop her off despite the possible dangers. Annie's jealous ex-lover not only follows them, but gets both his cop brother and Charlie's arch-enemy Alex (Bradley Cooper) on their tail.

Q&A with writer, director, and leading man, Josh Radnor on 'Liberal Arts'

Josh Radnor and Elizabeth Olsen star in the romantic drama 'Liberal Arts'

Actor, writer and director Josh Radnor sat down for an interview with Examiner Dorri Olds to talk about his new movie "Liberal Arts." The romantic comedy drama was shot at Radnor's alma mater Kenyon College, a small liberal arts school in Ohio. It opened in New York City this week.

In the film, Jesse Fisher (Radnor) is newly single, 35, and uninspired. When his favorite college professor (Richard Jenkins) invites him to campus to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse goes for it. He’s prepped for the bittersweet nostalgia of the dining halls and dorm rooms, parties and poetry seminars, but what he doesn’t expect is Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen), a beautiful, precocious, classical-music-loving sophomore. Zibby wakes up feelings of possibility and excitement that Jesse thought he’d lost forever.

Q&A with Elizabeth Olsen about 'Liberal Arts'

Josh Radnor and Elizabeth Olsen star in the romantic drama 'Liberal Arts'

Elizabeth Olsen sat down in midtown Manhattan with Examiner Dorri Olds to discuss Olsen’s character in the movie "Liberal Arts" which opened in NYC this week. Olsen stars opposite Josh Radnor—who also wrote and directed the film.

Olsen’s character, 19-year old college student Zibby, is precocious and fun. Jesse (Radnor) is a 35-year old bookworm whose growth has been stunted by college nostalgia. In a chance meeting, Zibby and Jesse hit it off. They connect on multiple levels and effect each other's lives in unexpected ways. Richard Jenkins is terrific as a sad retiring professor. Allison Janney is hilarious as Judith, a rather randy professor. Cast members Zac Efron and John Magaro also add solid performances in this bittersweet coming of age drama.

Q&A with Jenna Dewan-Tatum for 'Ten Years'

Jenna Dewan-Tatum danced into Hollywood (literally) back in 2006, when she starred opposite heartthrob — and her future husband — Channing Tatum in "Step Up." Since then, she's been hard at work, appearing in everything from romantic thrillers, like "Falling Awake," to the defunct TV series "The Playboy Club."

After some time apart (professionally), however, she and Mr. Tatum have teamed up again, returning to the silver screen as a couple teetering on the brink of engagement in "10 Years." Penned by Jamie Linden, the scribe who brought the Channing-starrer "Dear John" to life, this romantic dramedy follows a group of high school friends the night of their 10-year reunion, as they discover they might not be as grown up as they'd like to believe.

So, is Jenna Dewan-Tatum all grown up... or what? She chatted with us about how she's changed since high school, what it was like playing her husband's girlfriend and why she wants to work with one of Channing's former on-screen flings. (Spoiler alert: it's not because she's jealous.)

'South Pacific' - a stage review

South Pacific dress rehearsal at the Princess Theatre, Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahu Rhodes.

TROPICAL delights await audiences of this chocolate-box South Pacific. The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic sits at the high water-mark of the post-war American musical, glancing gravely back to the Pacific theatre of World War II, staring at a seemingly limitless horizon of American cultural pre-eminence.

Its lush romantic score surges with hummable tunes. The show has always repaid vocal variety, calling for Broadway sass in comic numbers, and operatic power and control for its immortal love songs. This production nails them all, thanks to astutely cast leads and in particular a surprisingly strong and passionate performance from Lisa McCune.

THE PREACHER’S WIFE is a sweet, holiday movie that will warm the cockles of even the coldest heart with Denzel Washington’s smile, Whitney Houston’s voice and the little kid’s cuteness. Henry (Courtney B. Vance) is an inner-city reverend who is struggling to make ends meet at St. Matthew’s Baptist Church. He’s forever reaching out to the senior citizens, single moms and even spends much of his spare time trying to help assist a local youth who has been wrongfully accused of a crime. On top of everything else, real estate guru Joe Hamilton (Gregory Hines) wants to tear down St. Matthew’s and build a mega church in its place. One day, he desperately prays for the Lord to send help. And that help comes in the form of a sharply dressed man by the name of Dudley (Denzel Washington) who just happens to be an angel from heaven.

October Baby - a DVD Review

title image

October Baby is like three movies shoved into one. It’s a romance, a spring break movie, and the story of a young woman who finds out she was adopted after an attempted abortion. More of a focus is on the latter, but the film may have been a whole lot better with a little more of either of the former.

Grosse Pointe Blank - a blu-ray review

Minnie Driver, John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank

GROSSE POINTE BLANK is not your typical romantic comedy and I couldn’t be happier for this fun twist on the genre. Government trained assassin turned professional killer, Martin Blank, has been summoned home for his ten year high school reunion. Not having been home since he stood-up his senior prom date and ditched town for this unique line of work, he considers avoiding the reunion until an assignment sends him that direction. Deciding to hit two birds with one stone, Martin (the dreamy John Cusack) packs his bags and heads to Grosse Pointe to visit his past and take care of business in this uniquely funny reunion flick. With government spooks on his trail, a competitor assassin upset that Blank got the killing assignment and other baddies who want him dead, the real danger is when Martin Blank faces his prom date, Debbi (the adorable Minnie Driver), for the first time since ditching her ten years ago.

Channing Tatum expresses desire to direct something small before taking on Magic Mike 2

In the film world, no one's had a better 2012 than Tatum. Somewhat mocked by many in years gone by, the actor kicked off the year by impressing in Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire," before having three $100 million+ smash hits in five months, in the shape of romantic drama "The Vow," acclaimed comedy "21 Jump Street" and Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," which Tatum also produced, and based on his own life. Wildly different films, but Tatum impressed in each, and has gone from a nearly-man to one of the most in-demand leading men around.

'Remember Me' - A theater review

Joyce DeWitt stars in the Alhambra's "Remember Me." Handout

“Remember Me” is a charming romantic comedy that explores an interesting subject: How do people, after years of comfortable marriage, avoid taking one another for granted? That theme is explored with a funny, sexy, somewhat risque story.

As the play begins, Mary and Brian Hanson seem to be living the good life. They’re successful — he’s a tax attorney, she’s a decorator. They’ve raised a family and downsized from the suburbs to an upscale Manhattan apartment.

But Brian is a little bit boring and Mary is a little bit bored. Then Brian goes off to play tennis, Mary answers a doorbell and she finds Peter Lawrence, a man she once wanted to marry until he abruptly dumped her, standing in the doorway.

He’s come to apologize and maybe to sweep her off her feet. And she’s not completely averse to being swept.

'Getting Sara Married' - A sitcom-reminiscent theater review

Thumbnail image for Ozzy Tirmizi, Jan Searson McSwain, Sarah Jean Bircher.jpg

The set-up:

Sam Bobrick's romantic comedy, Getting Sara Married, is so airy it floats away while we're watching. This might be perfectly acceptable when such fluff is on TV (which, trust me, is where this whole enterprise gets its inspiration), but when stuck in a theater without other distractions, a featherweight sit-com can weigh a ton of bricks.

The execution:

It's no surprise Sara has TV written all over it -- Bobrick is a former master craftsman of the family comedy. He's had his hand in The Andy Griffith Show, Bewitched, Get Smart, and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, among many other classic shows, so he knows all about the technique for writing comedy. He could write one blindfolded.
