Nora Ephron: Master of Romantic Comedy

Nora Ephron

"You've Got Mail" is better than a 1990s film based on the novelty of email deserves to be.

It comes from an ancient time when cafes placed the @ symbol in their titles to appear hip, when computer monitors were huge beige boxes large enough to dry clothes on and social media meant talking about the latest episode of Friends.

The film begins with the sound of a dial-up modem connecting to this amazing new thing called "the interweb". You know, the one with emails. Never mind, it was a brief craze in the late 90s that soon fizzled out.

Meg Ryan is having a secret email relationship with a mysterious man, but little does she know that her online crush is in fact Tom Hanks - the man trying to put her lovely little bookshop out of business with his mega book chain that serves coffee and has sofas and everything. Remember those?

All this is established swiftly and wittily in the first 10 minutes.
