The mysteries of first love, the simple joys of writing longhand in a notebook, and some deep navel gazing come together in the offbeat but surprisingly serious Chilean drama “Bonsai.”
Diego Noguera plays Julio, a melancholy young novelist searching for himself, his voice and his place in the world, or at least in Santiago. A noncommittal romantic relationship with Blanca, a neighbor across the hall, provides companionship but lacks spark. Nearly hired to transcribe a famous writer’s work-in-progress, he leads Blanca to think he got the job, showing her pages that he actually is writing instead.
