'She Loves Me' Tells a Classic Romance and Comedy

"If we are lucky, every once in awhile, we get a peek at a love that gives reassurance that all is well with this world. We take comfort in this and gain hope in the knowledge that two people, just like you and I, can create and share the very same thing that seems to hang the stars in the sky, give diamonds their sparkle and makes fireworks go ka-boom day or night. And if our luck holds, well, then all is right and all will remain right."

So it is with the love we see shared by George and Amalia in the play "She Loves Me," opening at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Historic Chief Theatre, home of the Paul Bunyan Playhouse, in downtown Bemidji.

This classic charming musical, the final production of the 2013 summer season, is the third adaptation of the play "Parfumerie" by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszlo. The sweetly innocent, yet romantic tale became the film "The Shop Around the Corner" in 1940 and was done as a musical version,"In the Good Old Summertime," in 1949. It was resurrected yet again in 1998 as the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan film "You've Got Mail." Audiences everywhere can't seem to get enough of this endearing love story. And from the moment the curtain rises, one can understand why.

Edgy and Twisted Romantic Comedy Lands at Fox

A decade after Ally McBeal ended its run, another hourlong comedy about a quirky single female attorney is coming to Fox. In a competitive situation with three networks bidding, Fox has landed an untitled project from the Parenthood duo of Jason Katims & Sarah Watson and Universal Television. The project is an edgy, twisted romantic comedy set in a Chicago law firm that is centered on a single 30something attorney working at the firm. It will be written by Watson with Katims supervising. The two will executive produce, with Katims’ head of development Michelle Lee producing.

This is the first project under the new overall deal Katims signed with Universal TV six weeks ago when he beefed up his production banner with the hire of Lee. This also marks Watson’s first crack at development under the overall deal she inked with the studio in March. UTA-repped Watson is a co-executive producer on Katims’ NBC dramedy Parenthood, on which she has been since day one, rising from producer. In addition to developing, executive producing and running Parenthood, CAA-repped Katims ran football drama Friday Night Lights, winning an Emmy for writing the series finale. The new project expands the relationship between Uni TV and Fox. The studio produced Fox’s long-running medical drama House and is behind the network’s high-profile new comedy The Mindy Project.

Romantic Comedy Novel to Swoon Over

MANILA, Philippines - At my all-girl high school way back in the 80s, students would swoon over tales of romance from popular paperback series such as Sweet Dreams and Sweet Valley High.

For the more “advanced readers,” Mills & Boon and Harlequin Romance, along with the occasional Barbara Cartland, were the paperbacks of choice even if they were supposed to cater to more mature audiences because of their explicit content.

One thing in common about these pulp romances is they were all written in English by American and British authors.

Fast forward to the present. Browsing at the romance novel section of any bookstore in Metro Manila, you'll see right away that our authors' works — whether in Filipino or Taglish at that — have matched and even overtaken the popularity of foreign-authored romances.

Comedy Actress Rachel Dratch Gushes Over Her 'Love's Labour's Lost'

Not even Rachel Dratch’s “Saturday Night Live” killjoy Debbie Downer can dull her buzz.

The comic actress makes her Shakespeare in the Park debut Tuesday in “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” and she’s stoked.

“Oh my gosh, it’s crazy fun,” says Dratch. “My agent called me out of the blue and said that I’d been asked to be in the show.”

Dratch plays the supporting role of the scholar Holofernes in a new musical take on the Bard’s moody early romantic comedy. “It was an instant yes,” she says. “I don’t know how I got this part.”

Anyone who’s seen “SNL” alum Dratch on stage in any number of “The 24 Hour Plays,” or the political-scandal comedy “Tail! Spin!” or “Celebrity Autobiography,” has a good bead on why she’s acting alongside musical theater vets like Colin Donnell, Daniel Breaker and Rebecca Naomi Jones. Dratch is fearless, fast on her feet and reliably delivers the funny.

Michigan Shakespeare Festival Showcases Goofy, Romantic Plays

Summer theater used to be filled with light comedies, mindless musicals and other silliness. But things have been changing. Those summer stock favorites have moved over to give way to Shakespeare.

Yes, the warm months have sprouted lots of Shakespeare festivals, and many are a lot closer than Stratford, Ontario.

This weekend is the opening for the 19th season of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, a professional company, and it is serving up three lavishly produced plays, performed in repertory: Shakespeare’s funny and frothy “Twelfth Night” and rarely seen “King John,” and a comedy of manners and satire, “She Stoops to Conquer,” by Oliver Goldsmith.

REVIEW A Shortcut to Happiness

Performed by Marlborough Repertory.

Boathouse Theatre, Blenheim.

Reviewed by Angela Adye

Roger Hall has done it again. Wednesday night's A Shortcut to Happiness entertained an appreciative audience who left the Boathouse Theatre with smiles on their faces and a keener insight into how others may view Kiwi culture.

Inspired by a quote from author Vicki Baum, "There are few shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them" - and Hall's own international folk dancing experiences - the play pokes ungentle, amusing fun at our "Kiwi kulture".

A Little Comedy, A Little Romance with 'Love'

Love Is All You Need
As “Love Is All You Need” opens, Ida is meeting with a doctor, going over what she is planning to do after recovering from breast cancer surgery. About the same time, Philip is dodging a birthday party and the advances of his secretary at his fruit wholesaling company.

The pair seemingly have nothing in common. But her daughter is going to marry his son — at Philip’s Italian villa. So they are destined to meet. That collision, however, doesn’t take place on the Mediterranean coast. Instead, it takes place in a Copenhagen airport parking garage.

In a conventional romantic comedy, that would be “meeting cute.” But “Love Is All You Need” is far more romance than comedy, and the crash is hardly laughable. Ida has just walked in on her husband in flagrante delicto on their couch with a girl from accounting.

She's competing for a major promotion, her long-term boyfriend dumps her for another woman, and the child she gave up for adoption years ago may be applying to her school.

"30 Rock" star Tina Fey cuts through this imposing plot clutter to craft another plucky, multitasking character, with help from ever-charming Paul Rudd as the guy we know she should end up with.

Romantic Comedy Emerges From Explosions

LOS ANGELES—Saying that he’s wanted to do something a little more personal for some time now, director Michael Bay, known for such big-budget action films as Transformers and Armageddon, announced Tuesday the start of production on What Are The Odds?, a quirky romantic comedy about two unlikely explosions who fall in love.

According to Bay, who also wrote the script for the film, the rom-com centers around a type-A helicopter blast who thinks it has it all figured out when a free-spirited diesel truck explosion unexpectedly enters its life and shakes everything up.

Romantic Comedy and More Lights Up the Weekend Entertainment

Entertainment news from the Lancashire Evening Post

On Friday evening the audience were treated to three one-act plays.

Game On by Dark Knights Theatre was a difficult play to get right as much depended on improvisation as the dialogue was not set in stone.  Based on TV game shows, this could be loosely likened to rather risqué Mr & Mrs and was heavily dependent on audience participation. Perhaps because it was the first play of the evening or maybe because the audience hadn’t quite anticipated the format and were unsure of their role, it could only be described as excruciatingly embarrassing for all. Marie Dickson, Dave Kirby, Barbara Cooper and Ruth Sinclair took on the parts of compere/hostess and contestants with two unfortunate members of the audience being coaxed on to the stage as the other participants. The whole thing became chaotic and, with no real structure, the ‘play’ stumbled to a close.

Romantic Comedy Breezes Through Bollywood Once Again

Has the era of romance returned to Bollywood?
Bollywood goes through different distinct time periods. Sometimes romance rules the box office and audiences' hearts, sometimes action movies are the flavour of the season, sometimes thrillers, while other times drama or comedy movies. In the last few years, it has been the masala action genre that has mostly ruled the box office.

However, more recently the winds of change have been blowing and it seems that the era of romance has finally returned to Bollywood. Romantic films have been doing good business, getting critical acclaim, receiving awards, and winning audiences' hearts. Even action movies like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara have an important element of romance in them. Some action heroes have also sensed this change and are planning to turn to romance. Below is a look at the romantic movies that have done well since the beginning of 2012 and also the upcoming romantic movies of 2013.

Comedic Production of Romeo and Juliet Graces the Faction of Fools Theatre

Faction of Fools Theatre Company returns to the Capital Fringe Festival this summer with an original production of Romeo and Juliet. What makes this version of the Bard’s famous tragedy about two young lovers completely unique? It’s a comedy.

As the premier Commedia dell’Arte theatre company in the area, Faction of Fools is well-known for applying the tradition of Italian comedy to its productions. A Commedia Romeo and Juliet, which originally premiered to sold-out houses at Flashpoint’s Mead Theatre Lab in 2011, will be performed at the Shop at Fort Fringe from July 11 to 28 as part of non-profit Capital Fringe’s annual festival.

“Our Commedia version is not a parody or a mockery of Shakespeare,” says Faction of Fools Artistic Director Matthew R. Wilson, also one of the nation’s leading experts in Commedia dell’Arte. “Rather, it is an attempt to see the original story as Shakespeare’s audiences would have seen it – a funny, joyful love story that meets a surprising, tragic end.”
