Best Romantic Comedies in Films

Marking its 25th anniversary this week is "When Harry Met Sally," which many viewers consider the best romantic comedy ever made. Certainly, the film (released on July 12, 1989), deftly directed by Rob Reiner, smartly written by Nora Ephron, and indelibly acted by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, is the most influential romantic comedy of the past quarter century. Virtually every rom-com since has borrowed from its witty banter, its urban setting, its soundtrack both modern and nostalgic, and its neurotic-yet-lovable leads.

Of course, "When Harry Met Sally" also owed a debt of influence to Woody Allen's romantic comedies about talky New Yorkers, as well as to dozens of other rom-coms, going all the way back to the road-trip antics of Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in 1934's screwball classic, "It Happened One Night."

Surprising Truths About Your All Time Fave Romantic Comedies

1. Emma Thompson wore a fat suit in Love Actually.

2. Betty White almost didn’t take her role in The Proposal because she didn’t want to leave her golden retriever.

3. A menu screen from Never Been Kissed was used in the original Blu-Ray and DVD of Fight Club. David Fincher says he wanted a movie from the same year that Fight Club was released.

4. At the Amsterdam premiere of Music and Lyrics, a journalist handcuffed herself to Hugh Grant and walked the red carpet with him.

5. In Jenna’s room in 13 Going on 30 on the day of her 13th birthday party, there is a framed picture of Madonna on her vanity table, leaned on the mirror. When she is 30, she comes across the same photograph, but it is signed.

6. The “Penis Song,” which can be seen on unedited version of The Sweetest Thing, was written by Cameron Diaz, Selma Blair, and Christina Applegate.

RomComs in Unconventional Yet Innovative Ways

"They Came Together" (out this Friday in select theaters), starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, is a parody of the romantic comedy genre. Rudd stars as Joel, a corporate businessman whose company is threatening to close the small store run by Poehler's Molly (remind you of the premise of a certain rom-com by the name of "You've Got Mail?). The film mocks and twists conventional romantic comedies, turning the tired tropes of films like "Sleepless in Seattle" on its head. But while the mockery of the overused rom-com themes are appreciated, "They Came Together" is not the first of its kind. Check out our list of romantic comedies that have an unconventional or innovative twist. Then let us know what your favorites are in the comments.

"(500) Days of Summer" Dir. Marc Webb (2009)

The most interesting aspect of Marc Webb’s 2009 romantic comedy—and what makes it unconventional— is that (spoiler alert!) the lead couple doesn’t end up together in the end. Summer (Zooey Deschanel) and Tom’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) relationship is presented non-linearly, with jumps back and forth in time. As viewers, we really like Summer and Tom together, and want them to end up happy in the end. But what the story tries to convey, however, is that while one person in a duo may be convinced they have met “the one,” that may not be the case for the other. Don’t worry, things turn out all right in the end, just not in the way that you’d expect. (Casey Cipriani)
