They Came Together Shows Off RomCom Spoof

I'm just a guy, sitting in front of a screen, asking it to make me laugh at beautiful, awkward, charming people who are falling in love. The romantic comedy can be a fine way to burn two hours, but it's a silly genre at heart, with its contrived meet-cutes and drawn-out misunderstandings, and also a tough form to master, given that so much of the modern canon asks us to want love for characters that are barely even likable.

Think about two of the paragons of the genre: Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle is an awful dingbat of a human, not to mention a deluded stalker creep. Whereas Tom Hanks in You've Got Mail is even worse, turning the tables on Meg by crushing his dream-lady's professional dreams, then manipulating her into loving him. Appropriate trailers for those films can be found here and here. It's been 25 years since Harry met Sally (Meg again!), but does anyone really think they'd still be together today?

Katherine Heigl Shares there's More to Her than what People may Think

Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) may not consider herself as difficult to work with as she's reputed to be, but the Grey's Anatomy alum admits to E! Online that she can be tightly-wound — and that she's working on it.

"I feel more of a sense of peace," Katherine says of her recent mindset. "I'm a neurotic actor, I'm not gonna lie. I'm absolutely a neurotic actor, and we all kind of are, but I'm less atwitter, and I'm less defensive, and I'm less afraid of what everybody thinks of me."

But that's not to say the 35-year-old sees herself as bulletproof. "I get my feelings hurt, and I certainly get frustrated because I want to prove I'm something, or prove to people that I'm more than they think, but I don't get quite as aflutter about it as I did in my youth," she explains. "And I have a deeper understanding of what really matters, and who really matters, whose opinion really matters."

CFCT to Showcase Urban RomCom

CEDAR FALLS | It finally hit Director Joe Frenna weeks into rehearsals for “6 Rms Riv Vu.”
“Essentially, it’s a comedy about women’s liberation in the 1970s. I don’t know why I didn’t see it sooner, but the discovery came to me several weeks ago watching the actors running through scenes. The '60s was a decade for the sexual revolution and self-discovery, and the '70s was about figuring out what to do with that knowledge. Women were liberating themselves,” Frenna explains....

The Cedar Falls Community Theatre urban romantic comedy opens Friday at the Oster Regent Theatre, with additional performances Saturday and Aug. 2 and 3.

Written by Bob Randall, the title “6 Rms Riv Vu” is shorthand used in classified advertising by real estate agents, and translates as “6 Rooms with a River View.” Two potential renters respond to a New York Times advertisement for an apartment and find themselves locked in and trapped inside.

How TV Reinvented Romantic Comedy

Writing for Vulture last week, critic Margaret Lyons called for a new era in romantic comedy that plays out on the small screen.

“TV has a long, proud history of will-they-or-won’t-they relationships, and it’s easy to imagine a new wave of that as just when-will-they,” she wrote. “There are lots of kinds of love stories. It’s just a matter of shifting the focus: Instead of a lawyer show where characters happen to fall in love, it’s a love show where characters happen to be lawyers. We have so many lawyer shows. Can’t one of them be this?”

But I think at least part of the future Lyons dreams about has already arrived. A group of showrunners for Fox’s comedies said at a panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday that the decline of movie romantic comedies had left a lot of territory for them to work with.

Katherine Heigl Opens Up on Family, RomCom and Hollywood

After quitting Hollywood back in 2009 to focus on her family, Katherine Heigl, the rom-com queen, is back and better than ever with a new US TV show, State Of Affairs, and animated movie, The Nut Job.

Speaking exclusively to us, Katherine explained the reasons behind her break from the limelight and said she was starting to regret taking so many parts in romantic comedies and needed to reevaluate her career goals. 'This thing that was my best friend for a long time suddenly turned on me,' she said of the notorious Hollywood machine. 'And I didn’t expect it. I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me.'

She stars on the new fall series "State of Affairs," playing a CIA attache who informs the president on high-level incidents around the world. It's the first TV series for Heigl since she left her Emmy-winning role on "Grey's Anatomy" in 2010 after six seasons.

Heigl's mother, Nancy, is serving as an executive producer on the NBC series debuting in November. She manages her 35-year-old daughter's career and has had similar credits on "One for the Money," "Life as We Know It" and "The Ugly Truth," all starring Heigl.

Katherine Heigl Wore Fancy Dress for NBC Afterparty

Actress Katherine Heigl looked like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders as she attended the NBCUniversal Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour Afterparty  on Sunday evening.

Changing from the pretty white dress she wore earlier in the day the 35-year-old slipped into a sexy high-waisted skirt and top for the event held at the RivaBella in West Hollywood.

She teamed her navy skirt which was buttoned up the centre with a black and white patterned top, and a pair of pointy stiletto heels.

Earlier in the day the star faced some pretty tough questioning when she fronted the panel for her new series State Of Affairs during the 2014 NBCUniversal TCA Press Tour in Beverly Hills on Sunday.

RomComs to be Discussed in TCA Panel

With the $15 million weekend opening of Sex Tape serving as exhibit A, it would be an understatement to say that romantic feature comedies have been in a sling creatively and at the B.O. for sometime.  But for those TV creators who love the genre at Fox’s “Behind the Laughs” TCA panel, if romantic comedies are alive, then it’s on the small screen with such shows as Elizabeth Meriwether’s New Girl and Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project. Chalk the death of romantic comedy movies up to the staling of set premises like the sexy wedding planner who can’t get anybody or, as Kaling pointed out, “Matthew McConaughey falling into a cake.

“They are so predictable, but that’s why I love them so much. I think they can be good, but they’ve been suffering for so long.  I think the easiest way to your voice out there (for romantic comedies) is TV,” said Kaling whose next season of The Mindy Project dotes on her character’s relationship with long-love Danny (Chris Messina).

Katherine Heigl, Christopher Walken Talk 'Affairs'

NBC’s days at the Television Critics Association summer press tour marked the return of familiar faces, several renewal announcements, and some news about “Peter Pan.”

During his opening remarks and Q&A session, NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced that actor Christopher Walken has been cast as Captain Hook in the upcoming live version of the musical.
Following on the ratings success of last year’s “The Sound of Music,” NBC is prepping “Pan” for Dec. 4.

Although the actor/actress portraying the main role has yet to be announced, Greenblatt was excited for the casting of Walken who, in addition to his memorable roles in films like “Pulp Fiction” and “The Deer Hunter,” has also worked in musicals on Broadway. “I can guarantee you he’s going to bring his own spin to Captain Hook, and this might be the first tap dancing Captain Hook that you’ve ever seen,” said Greenblatt.

'You're the Worst', a Romantic Comedy that's Against RomCom

FX is joining HBO and Netflix, breaking the network TV mold by premiering a whole slate of new shows this summer, instead of padding the schedule with reruns and the X-Men movies. The cable network’s promising, raunchy new comedy You’re the Worst follows Aya Cash and Chris Geere as Gretchen and Jimmy: two single, misanthropic twenty-something struggling professionals in Los Angeles who get into bed together to distract themselves from the frustrations of the rest of their lives. The cast is filled out with experienced actors who for some reason have never broken out, from Cash and Geere to Desmin Borges and Kether Donahue as their respective BFFs.

You’re the Worst is an inside-out romantic comedy, where the characters constantly try to out-match one another’s dispassion. It’s a friends-with-benefits arrangement where they aren’t really friends. But unlike other attempts at this kind of show, like HBO’s How to Make It in America and MTV’s I Just Want My Pants Back, You’re the Worst looks like it has some charisma and chemistry between the two leads. Meaning, the sex is good, and it’s the thing that keeps them coming back to one another. To their credit, FX seems open to including actual sex scenes, something rarely found outside of HBO.

Best Romantic Comedies in Films

Marking its 25th anniversary this week is "When Harry Met Sally," which many viewers consider the best romantic comedy ever made. Certainly, the film (released on July 12, 1989), deftly directed by Rob Reiner, smartly written by Nora Ephron, and indelibly acted by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, is the most influential romantic comedy of the past quarter century. Virtually every rom-com since has borrowed from its witty banter, its urban setting, its soundtrack both modern and nostalgic, and its neurotic-yet-lovable leads.

Of course, "When Harry Met Sally" also owed a debt of influence to Woody Allen's romantic comedies about talky New Yorkers, as well as to dozens of other rom-coms, going all the way back to the road-trip antics of Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in 1934's screwball classic, "It Happened One Night."
