Romantic Comedy Tainted with Greek Mythology

Silvia Colloca and Matt Zeremes

The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars is produced by Wollongong's Merrigong Theatre Company, HotHouse Theatre and Griffin Theatre Company and runs in Wollongong until next Saturday.

The show stars Matt Zeremes (Holding the Man, Underbelly, All Saints) and Silvia Colloca (Van Helsing, The Detonator, Triple Happiness), and was written by University of Wollongong alumni Van Badham.
It's a romantic story that follows artist Marion (Colloca) quest for love and her relationships with two separate men played by Zeremes.

It also draws on the Greek mythological stories of Ariadne, Theseus and Dionysis.

Romantic Comedy That Takes Us Back to School Days

"Admission," the romantic comedy film starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, opened Thursday evening, April 11, at the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines.

Every spring, high school seniors and their families anxiously await notification as to whether college applicants have been accepted, rejected or offered a spot on the wait list.

In the film, "There are a number of sly, precise jokes and observations at the expense of pushy parents, vain professors and compulsively striving youngsters," says A.O. Scott in The New York Times.

"Admission" is more than a satire of academia, according to several film critics. It is "a serious film about life's relationships and growing up, with a gloss of humor," writes Michael O'Sullivan in The Washington Post.

A Bizarre Romantic Comedy

                                  Rachel McAdams Bradley Cooper - H 2013

Rachel McAdams is in negotiations to join the growing cast of the untitled romantic comedy Cameron Crowe wrote and is directing.

Scott Rudin is producing the movie, which already has Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone on board to star and is eyeing a September start.

The premise sounds pretty loopy for a romantic comedy: A defense contractor (Cooper) who is overseeing a weapons satellite launch from Hawaii teams up with (and falls for) an Air Force pilot (Stone) to scuttle the launch. Mystical island forces and a talking computer also play a part.
McAdams will play Cooper’s ex-girlfriend.

The actress next stars in About Time, a romantic time-travel comedy from one of the masters of the romantic-comedy genre, Richard Curtis (Love Actually). The movie opens Nov. 8.

Comedy Resurrected at 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Emily Hurley
"I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me," declares a lead character in the play Much Ado About Nothing.

It was a bold statement for a woman in the late 16th century when William Shakespeare wrote the lines, but Beatrice has become one of his most famous characters, says Blenheim actor Ian Wilshin.
He plays Benedick, who tells Beatrice (Aley Matthews) at the start of the play he will never fall in love or marry.

Much Ado About Nothing opens in Blenheim tomorrow night for a 10-show season at the Boathouse Theatre. It follows three months' rehearsal for the 18-member cast to master their lines and practise stage routines. Director Denise Moran's passion for Shakespeare has helped bring the romantic comedy alive, Wilshin says.

A Series of Romance and Comedies for Reno Theater

'Noises Off' tells of confused actors rehearsing for a play.
The next few weekends provide no shortage of opportunities to check out a variety of plays on the stages of local theaters.

From a play-within-a-play comedy to a classic young adult novel adaptation to a he-said-she-said romantic musical, there’s a little something for everyone.

'Noises Off'

Reno Little Theater presents the story of confused actors attempting to put on a theater production. It’s directed by Doug Mishler.

“It’s crazy, it’s nonstop action and lots of confusion,” said Nancy Podewils of the RLT. “It’s about actors who don’t know their lines and don’t realize it. They don’t know their exits. There’s a plate of sardines that’s essential to a lot of the craziness.”

'Twenty Million People' Goes Beyond Usual Humor

The summary of this Cinequest exclusive film is described as not your ordinary romantic comedy — if only that statement were true.

Aside from the misleading summary, "Twenty Million People" is a very funny romantic comedy about Brian, played by Michael Ferrell — also the writer and director — and his best friend Edward, played by Chris Prine, who together tackle the overexposed subject of relationships.

Brian is your everyday single romantic comedy hating man who thinks long-term relationships are basically not worth the time.

His best friend Edward, however, has been in a relationship for two years and only plans to get more serious with his girlfriend by moving in together as soon as possible.

100-Year-Old Romantic Comedy Goes Into Play

Tess Ammerman (left) and Kathy Garofano in Peg O’ My Heart.
TO kick of a new series of plays and musicals, Off-Broadstreet Theatre’s Bob and Julie Thick are presenting their audiences a comedy — one you might not be familiar with.

Peg O’ My Heart is a 100-year-old romantic comedy by J. Hartley Manners, and the Thicks promise that it’s still a delight.

”It goes along at a fairly gentle pace and we’re not trying to push that too much because it is truly a piece that needs to take its time and be savored as well as enjoyed,” says Mr. Thick, who is directing the show at Off-Broadstreet in Hopewell, April 12-May 11.

More popular than the play is the song “Peg O’ My Heart,” written by Alfred Bryan and Fred Fisher. Mr. Thick says the tune was inspired by the play, while adding that neither it, nor any song, is heard in the play, because it’s not a musical.

A Romantic Comedy Set in Britain

The woman who gave us What Women Want has another romantic comedy on the horizon. Nancy Meyers has closed a deal to make her next film with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the studio announced Monday.

Meyers is set to direct and produce the untitled film. She also rewrote the screenplay, which was originally written by the duo behind (500) Days of Summer, Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber.
Here’s the description Sony provided for the film:
The life of an American young woman gets turned upside down when she begins dating a very unlikely young man. The complexities that follow are bigger than both of them. The comedy is set entirely in the UK, and the film will have an all-British cast with the exception of the female lead.

A Romantic Comedy Family Affair

In an unusual twist an uncle and niece will play opposite one another as husband and wife in Maitland Repertory Theatre’s second play of the year – The Guardsman.

Robert Comber and Heidi Bush lead a small cast in the light comedy that sees an actor disguise himself to test his wife’s fidelity.

“People should feel for every single character in this play, except for mine, I think they will probably end up hating mine,” Ms Bush said.
